Clan Sleeve The addition of new remedial ties to stabilise the outer leaf is insufficient on its own where solid fishtail ties exist, as continued corrosion will result in further disruption of the wall. Removal, bending, cropping off the existing ties was recomended by the BRE in Digest 329 to end the disruptive activity and damage to the wall, however, these methods result in disfigurement and weakening of the facade, breaking a basic rule of building conservation. Insitu isolation of the existing wall ties was endorsed in BRE Digest 329. This treatment consisted of isolating the wall tie from the outer leaf of brickwork using a simple and inexpensive method and was patented. Development of this method continued in order to improve quality control of the isolation process. This consists of installing a PVC sleeve containing a rust inhibiting compound over the end of the wall tie in the outer leaf. This method has become widely recognised as the only way to treat existing wall ties to prevent further corrosion. The Clansleeve is incorporated in many wall tie manufacturers guarantee schemes and with many installers now working to BS 5750, the Clansleeve provides a controllable facility for ensuring compliance with on site standards.
