Surveys & Investigations

If a reinforced concrete structure shows signs of distress such as spalling, cracking or rust staining, three questions must be asked:

q       how serious is the problem?
q       how has the problem occurred?
q       how can it be put right?

Apart from the most common cause of distress, corrosion of the reinforcing steel, there are other possible causes such as foundation movement, structural overloading, accidental damage, HAC, alkali aggregate reaction and sulphate attack. Any of these may need immediate attention but generally the process is relatively slow. The task is to decide what is happening and implement a plan which will deal with the problem effectively and economically.

Clan Contracting Limited can offer a full diagnostic survey using any or all of the following techniques and tests:

q       Soundness testing
q       Ferroscan & covermeter survey
q       Carbonation depth testing
q       Chloride testing (on site and laboratory)
q
High Alumina Cement testing
q       Concrete cores
q       Ultrasonic pulse velocity measurements
q       Half cell potential measurement
q       Petrographics
q       Metallurgic Analysis
q       Endoscope surveys
q       Ultrasound surveys of metal structures

Following the diagnostic survey, a report is produced documenting findings, results, discussion and recommendations. Where necessary full specifications and bills of quantities can be prepared.
